Release: Julie Underwood and John Matthews endorse Jill Underly Campaign

HOLLANDALE, Wis. — Pecatonica Area School District Superintendent and candidate for Wisconsin State Superintendent Jill Underly announced today she has been endorsed by education leaders John Matthews and Julie Underwood.

“Jill has the most diversified experience, among all candidates, and understands the needs of children and teachers to move education forward for Wisconsin,” said John Matthews, the former longtime director of Madison Teachers, Inc. “Because of her professional background, Jill Underly is the only candidate who understands and can meet the needs of all parties.”

“I am proudly endorsing Jill Underly for State Superintendent of Public Instruction, because we need a progressive leader who understands the needs of our children and educators, to move all Wisconsin schools forward,” said Dr. Julie Underwood, former Dean of the UW-Madison School of Education and a nationally recognized public education leader. “She’s a champion of our public schools and will never cave to the privatization lobby. Her experience as a teacher in the classroom, an advisor at UW, a former DPI employee, and now as a working superintendent on the frontlines of COVID-19, make Jill the best candidate to meet the unique challenges we face at this moment.”

“John Matthews and Julie Underwood have both spent decades working to ensure every child, every day has the education they deserve,” said Dr. Jill Underly. “As educators and advocates, both John and Julie recognize the importance of leadership that understands the diverse needs of Wisconsin’s students and teachers, and I deeply appreciate their support.”
